Respecting the Ramadan Culture

Working and living in the GCC makes one to be able to adapt to the countries known cultures and one of which is the Ramadan.

Ramadan in 2018 just started last May 16 and will end on June 14.

In this time muslims are known to fast. For Filipinos who are non-muslims, they are not expected to fast but it is still important to show respect in their daily etiquettes in observance of the Ramadan.

  1. Do not eat, drink, or smoke in public during the fasting hours. This includes chewing gum.
  2. Do not dance or play music in public. You may listen to music quietly with headphones.
  3. Do not wear inappropriate clothing in public. Dress respectfully. Men should avoid wearing sleeveless tops, while women should cover their shoulders and knees.
  4. Do not swear.
  5. Accept gifts, from a simple date to something more exotic, try to politely accept it. Further, if invited, it would always be an honour to join someone at Iftar.

Ramadan Kareem from all of us at OFW Careers!

Allied Health Opportunities in the Gulf Region

The view of the job market in the Gulf Region predominantly always been based on nurses and doctors and the rush was to find positions in that field. Allied health professionals, which comprise nearly 60% of the healthcare workforce, are often overlooked as career launching pads.

With its ambitious plan to bring its healthcare services to world class standards, over the coming years, the Gulf Region will need an influx of clinical personnel to meet its growing demand for high-quality medical services. Across the Gulf region, there are staffing shortages in the healthcare sector, including allied health professionals.

According to the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions, Allied Health may be defined as those healthcare professions that are different from the medicine and nursing disciplines. Allied health professionals are the segment of the workforce that delivers services involving the identification, evaluation and prevention of diseases and disorders; dietary and nutrition services; and rehabilitation and health systems management.

Professions that are often listed as “allied health” include many non-nurse, non-physician healthcare providers including:

– audiologists and speech language pathologists;
– physical therapists,
– occupational therapists and respiratory therapists;
– diagnostic medical personnel (medical laboratory scientists, cytogenetic technologists, diagnostic molecular scientists, histotechnologists, and pathologists’ assistants);
– imaging specialists (radiographers, nuclear medicine technologists, and sonographers); nutritionists and dietitians;
– and physician assistants.
– dental personnel (dental hygienists and dental assistants);
– exercise science professionals (athletic trainers, exercise physiologists, kinesiotherapists );
– health information technologists;
– specialists in cancer diagnosis and treatment (medical physicists, medical dosimetrists, and radiation therapists);
– pharmacy personnel (pharmacy technicians and assistants)
– medical assistants

A high quality service is a result of a collaborative effort that begins with physicians and nurses to the allied health professional. Effective treatment, however, can only come after proper interpretation of results that lead to accurate identification of the disease and disorders, one of the many important roles of the allied health professional.

OFW Careers, together with its partnering medical facilities in the Gulf Region recognises the importance of this sector and continues to assist placing qualified personnel in the field of allied healthcare. Additionally it continues to actively search for qualified candidates to meet the growing need for these specialist expertises in the region.

With its years of experience in positioning staff in the healthcare sector, OFW Careers recognizes the potential of our overseas workers, from physicians and nurses to allied health professionals and the assistance that will make them continuously job ready for the next bright opportunity.

Enjoy Peace of Mind – Alway be Job Ready

Her name is Rose and she is currently a Charge Nurse, a position she has held for the best part of her 16 years in Abu Dhabi.

Asked what made her choose Abu Dhabi, it was more of what the place had to offer her in terms of her financial goals closely followed by career. With 3 lovely children to raise, their future has become the focus of her job. She takes on added duties with additional hours confident that she will be paid commensurately. The equitable compensation that she receives in her current work in relation to hours worked is well above what she can receive back home. The Gulf Region still offers the peace of mind she seeks.

Statistics from the 2016 Overseas Salary Report reflects that jobs in the healthcare industry remain amongst one of the highest paying sectors, with OFWs getting an average of $2,000 USD per month.

Like the thousands of Filipino nurses who staff Abu Dhabi’s medical facilities, Rose left her homeland, because of low wages and “contractual work” without benefits. It was the promise of a high salary abroad, in contrast with the low wages in the Philippines that made her move to the Gulf Region 16 years ago. While working in Abu Dhabi, not only did she realise her financial goals but had also experience growth in her career.

While many like her are not planning a career move she admits that services being offered by OFW Careers is essential to those who are still looking at building their careers. Or in her case should a better opportunity arise then she will be Job Ready. For those like her, the idea that a Career Management Agency offering free, yet secured online storage for her important professional documents and the possibility of being offered better career opportunities for career progression are a great reason to join.

The Gulf Region is a very competitive job market particularly for the busy professional.

For this reason, the services offered by OFW Careers are invaluable. To have a professional manage their career and assist them in remaining Job Ready is the good news worth spreading.
